As I step through my writing journey I am always learning as I go. I have been looking at all sorts of resources and advice and there is definitely a pattern of common challenges to all authors, but there is also that stubborn part of me that doesn’t just want to blindly follow what those before me have done. I want to find what works for me as an individual.
So here’s something I have noticed: MY mood has a direct relationship with how well I have written a particular scene. If I am feeling pumped up and full of energy my action sequences seem to be better. If I am feeling more subdued then writing about the guilt, inner discussion or the self loathing of my lead character seems to come more naturally. You get the idea…
I have therefore changed my preparation for the type of material I am going to write next which (I think) has had a positive effect: before I write (to help me get into the ‘zone’) I listen to the type of music that will help to influence my mood.
For example: for action or fast paced scenes I listen to Pendulum, The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers or something similar with strong, fast bass lines. For the more startling / horrific material I listen to something along the lines of Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, Lunatic Calm or Monster Magnet. If it’s inner pain / guilt / sadness then Evanescence works; if it’s urban set Timbaland, Gnarls Barkley or Jack Johnson; if it’s more tender and emotional I quite like Newton Faulkner or David Gray; upbeat style Groove Armada, Jakatta, Royksopp or something of the house genre….
I am guessing that it does depend on your taste in music – mine is quite wide ranging so I have a good range to choose from. And here's how I can really light some fire under it: while listening to the music I start running through the scene in my head which I find is great for visualising, generating more creative ideas and honing in on important detail.
If you are like me, in that music does have a direct effect on your mood and emotional state, then this could be good for your writing.
Or maybe I am just weird….?!
